Football Case Study: Tunisia

The end of the day in Hafsia, Tunis gives way to football. Neighborhood pitches host games as intense and meaningful as any on our screens this summer, the balconies of apartment blocks surrounding the action acting as the stands from which family and friends look on. The scenes are typically Tunisian, but the spirit universal.

Beb Souika is used to winning. This neighborhood belongs to Esperance de Tunis but last night it belonged to the nation, as fans gathered in the cafes to watch their country play their first World Cup group game against Sweden. In the end, football takes as much as it gives and the result wasn't meant to be. While the loss will hurt, how the team reacts will define the coming weeks.

Football Case Study: Tunisia is a collaboration between my Instagram, Nikolaii Filippov, and Football Case Study — an editorial and research platform dedicated to showcasing the diverse cultures that make our game beautiful, and a global family of photographers, journalists, storytellers, researchers, and fans who see things differently.

Filmed across Tunis around the 2026 World Cup, the series looks at the game as it is actually lived here: neighbourhood pitches, cafés packed for a national match, and the streets of quarters like Hafsia and Beb Souika, where a result becomes a collective event. It runs as a series of short reels published on Instagram, each a small portrait of Tunisian football culture and the mood of a country following its team.
